What is Sadaqah Jaariyah?
It is an Islamic concept where a single donation will earn the donor rewards over and over again every time it is used, for example planting a tree or building a well.
Can I fund a well in memory of someone?
Yes you can. By funding an entire well you can have their name written on a permanent plaque on the well.
The story of the 1400 year-old well
Building wells is an amazing form of sadaqah jaariyah. But what is sadaqah jaariyah? It is a charitable concept in Islam where instead of a donation making a one off benefit to someone, this particular type of charity is one that has ongoing continuous benefits to someone. Its similar to the old adage, give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. This is true even after the donor has passed away, conceptually it can benefit that person forever.
Now to the story, 1400 years ago in a drought-ridden desert community. An unkind person owned a water well and charged the people extortionate prices to draw water from his well. Hearing of this, a wealthy man bought the well and he left it open for all to use, free of charge!
Imagine how relieved people would have been. That wealthy man received blessings for every drop of water that benefitted someone. You can probably see where this is going... that well still exists today! You can go and see it yourself in Medina, Saudi Arabia, and it's called the Well of Rumat. The wealthy man helped people in this world and helped himself in the next, is that not the ultimate investment?
